A Clinical Studies on Acute Pancreatitis

Abstract
A clinical observation was done on 38 cases of the acute pancreatitis diagnosed by the clinical and laboratory findings and treated at St. Benedict hospital in Busan as an in-patient during the four years period from April 1970 to March 1974.
The results of observation were as follows:
1. There was a predominance of the female showing the male to female ratio of about 1:1.7 with the highest age incidence in the 3rd and 4th decades.
2. The most frequent complaints were the upper abdominal pain (86.8%), nausea (68.4%) and vomiting (63.2%). Pain was radiated to the back (39.4%) and left shoulder (21. 0%).
3. The most frequent physical finding was the tenderness on the upper abdomen (76.3%) and the next abdominal rigidity. Jaundice was seen in 10.5% in cases. No case with Grey-turner or Cullen¢¥s sign was seen.
4. The most frequently observed finding in the survey films of the abdomen was "sentinel loop" sign (36.6%). The serum, amylase concentration varied from 300 to 960 Somogyi units. Among the liver function test alkaline phosphatase over 4 Bodansky units was seen in 31.2%, and serum-bilirubin over 1.1 mg% was seen in 25 0%.
5. The associated diseases were peptic ulcer and gastritis (21. 0%), biliary tract disorder (10.5%), and liver distomiasis (10. 5%). The associated conditions at the onset of acute pacreatitis were heavy meals (21.0%), and heavy alcohol (5.2%).
6. The result of treatment the time of discharge was cured cases of 44.7% improved cases of 55.3 % and no case of death.
